Banner Elk Paint Out Set for August 28
Linville, NC – When the Avery Arts Council and the Art Cellar Gallery co-hosted their Paint Out competition along the Banner Elk Greenway last year, they hoped it was the start of something great. Thirty five artists signed up to paint “en plein air,” and the crowd that gathered to view their day’s work confirmed it. The Banner Elk Paint Out had earned a place on the calendar.
This year the Banner Elk Paint Out is expanding to fill an entire weekend of art on August 27, 28, and 29. The Art Cellar Gallery returns as event sponsor and welcomes Fine Art Purveyors as co-sponsor, with proceeds to benefit the programs and services of the Avery Arts Council.
The program kicks off on Friday, Aug. 27, with a workshop taught by Scott Boyle from 9AM to 4PM. The workshop fee is $100 per person and advance registration is required. A reception for workshop attendees and the public starts at 4 and includes a “Quick Draw” activity to keep things lively. The folks at General Pencil, the oldest pencil company in the nation, have donated supplies for the Quick Draw as well as great stuff for the door prizes which will conclude the day’s festivities.
Saturday, August 28 is Paint-Out Day, when artists of all levels of experience set up along the Greenway and paint on site. Registration is $25 per person and takes place that morning from 8-10AM at the Art Cellar Gallery, 930 Shawneehaw Avenue (Hwy 194), Banner Elk. Painting concludes at 3:00 PM and the day ends with a grand review of all submissions followed by a reception and the awarding of prizes. Sponsor Mike Hill of Fine Art Purveyors has put together some fabulous prizes from Graham Art: a set of art supplies in the artist’s choice of medium (value $500) for first place, a Graham floor easel (value $300) for second place, and a Museum Masters table easel (value $150) for third place. The Avery Coalition of Galleries is sponsoring a People’s Choice category with a $100 cash prize.
On Sunday, August 29 it’s back to the classroom for another workshop session, this time with Richard Oversmith. The class takes place from 9AM – 4PM, and advance registration is required. Fee is $100 per person.
